Observation.
People are more likely to acknowledge you with a nod, a smile, or even a friendly "Hello" as they pass if you are both walking on the street, rather than the sidewalk.
Curious.
What is it that prompts this? Is it that they feel more of a connection? That you are bonded by your rebellious need to avoid the bone-crushingly slippery ice on the sidewalks , and play chicken with on-coming traffic?

Yeah, I think you got it right with the bond forming. It's an unusual place to be walking. Thus, your fellow street walker (no double meaning intended) is unusual, so why not say hi to someone who shares an unusual interest?
Either that or it's just human nature to be friendly in our last moments before being pulverized by a car.
Maybe it's about the nervousness of being out of a safe, numbing routine. Even that little bit of stress makes us more open to connect and lean on each other.
